The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.– Dr Seuss
Growing up, we adopt the values taught and shared with us by our guardians, friends, and the environment around us. We become products of our surroundings without much control on our part. Children learn by observing, listening, exploring, experimenting, and asking questions. Their surrounding in-part determines what interests they will have. The curiosity to understand how things work, why things are the way they are among many other curiosities is a natural desire for growth. One that should be directed since it shapes and determines many other outcomes in life.
We are all born with great potential which might be lost without direction. The responsibility for this direction and guidance should be a communal responsibility. Shared between the guardians, friends, teachers, neighbors, religious groups to mention a few. There’s a popular African proverb that goes “It takes a village to raise a child.” This means that an entire community of people must interact with children. This way, the children experience and grow in a safe and healthy environment to the best possible capacity.
One of the best ways to participate and give back to the community is by sharing good values. This is because our values build our character. One’s character determines their outcomes in life. When children adopt good values such as kindness, compassion, honesty, courage, and others at an early age, these values become the foundation of their moral beliefs.
I find books to be a great medium for sharing such values. Especially if the values are shared in wonderful stories as many storybooks do. Juma the dreamer storybook is an easy-to-read book. With a beautiful story to inspire children to believe in themselves. Telling them that they all have greatness within. To have courage, faith, and adopt good values. The book is available here here.
